Ronda

If you visit Andalucia or make a tour of Spain a visit to the small rustic mountain town of Ronda is mandatory, at least if I hava anything to say.
Some weekends when I wake up in the morning I feel that I need to take a drive from my home at the Mediterranean Sea in Marbella. It is not unusual that I end up on the road to Ronda.
It is a very rewarding day trip to take the car to Ronda because the road is fun to drive and the scenery is amazing (when you can take your eyes from the curvy road). When you arrive to Ronda after a little less then an hours drive it is nice to have a strole through the old town, sit down and have a coffe and maybe some Tapas or just stand somewhere on the edge of town and be amazed of the views. I have been up to Ronda a bunch of times but I am still as impressed with the Ronda scenery as I was the first time I set my feets here.

Bridges of Ronda

Puente Nuevo (the new bridge) was built between 1751 and 1793 and is an impressive piece of art. The bridge takes you to the old town of Ronda where you can find the world oldest bull fighting arena (more about that later). The new bridge towering 120 metres above the canyon floor. Both the views from the bridge and the views at the brigde is by itself worth the trip to Ronda.

There is two more bridges worth mentioning in Ronda. First we have Puente Romano (Roman bridge) which is also known as Puente San Miguel and second Puente Viejo (the Old Bridge) or Puente Arabe. The old bridge was built in the 16th century and the Roman brigde in the 13th.

Brief history of Ronda

Year 713 the arabs took over the reign of Ronda from the Visigoth and named the the city Izn-Rand Onda ("city of the castle") and made it the capital of the Takurunna province. The islamic domination of Ronda ended in 1485, when it was conquered by the Marquis of Cádiz.

Plaza de toros de Ronda - the bullring

The bull fighting arena in Ronda is one of the oldest operational bullrings in Spain (and the world). The construction was finished in 1785.
The bullring in Ronda is open to the public, charging a small admission fee.
