Marbella

The beginning

If Prince Egon zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg of Germany had rented a car, Marbella might not have been what it is today. Marbella has grown to what it is today because Prince Egon and his heir Prince Alfonsos Rolls-Royce broke down in Marbella. At the time, Marbella had just a little more then a population of 900 people. Prince Alfonso fell in love with Marbella and in 1954 he founded the Marbella Club Hotel and attracted the jet-set to Marbella.

Before the beginning

Well it did start a bit before Prince Alfonsos visit to the small Medeteranean coast town. Marbella have a longer history then that. Discoveries suggest that there was Phoenician and Punic settlements in Rio Real 700 BC. The Romans founded Marbella in the year 206 BC and was then called Salduba i.e. Salt City. Between 711 and 1485 Marbella was inhabited by the Arabs during the Islamic period. Where the name Marbella comes from is unknown but it can come from the latin Mar (sea), the Arabic Bil (by the) and La (there or place) - Place by the Sea (Mar-Bil-La). On the 11th of June 1485 the Spanish Catholic took over and this they is still being celebrated in Marbella as St. Barnabas day.

La Concha

Have you ever been to Marbella or seen pictures of Marbella then mountain La Concha is known to you. You can see it on the picture on the top of this page. It reaches 1200 metres over the Mediterranean Sea. If like a little bit of trekking a walk up on La Concha is recommended. Bring a lot of water and don't start to late. It takes about 4 hours to get to the top and you need to get back before dark. Don't wonder of the trail, it is very easy to get lost on the mountain and it gets really cold at night.
