Benalmadena

The name Benalmadena comes from "Bani al-Medina" and means "Son of the Settlement" in Arabic. The town has been influenced by the Moorish settlements but has gone through a significant change in the last decades. There is a big difference between Benalmadenas tourist area and the traditional Spanish village. The Benalmadena area offers an easy lifestyle and a comfortable climate (minimum temperatures of 5º and a summer maximum of 35º) with the light sea breezes.

Among the sites that are worth a visit is the Enlightment Stupa, the largest Stupa in Europe with it´s height of 33 meters on a location high above the city. A Stupa is a Buddhist temple.

The 17th century Santa Domingo Church in Benalmadena Pueblo is worth a visit.

Torre Quebrada, Torre Bermeja and Torre Muelle watchtowers that dates back to the 15th century.

The Arabic-style Bill Bil Castle is a landamark on the Benalmadena coastline and holds many events arranged by the Town Hall. There is art exhibitions, conserts and many other types of events.

Location

Benalmadena is found about 12 kilometers west of Malaga City between Torremolinos and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol in south of Spain.

Benalmádena Pueblo

The old village is a plate of Andalucian charm with the narrow cobbled winding streets between the white washed houses with colourful flowers filled balconies. This is a calm and relaxing little village filled of romance even though it is so close to the tourist bustling Benalmadena Costa. The village sits on a hillside about 300 meters above the Mediterranean sea with splendid views. In the centre of Benalmadena Pueblo is Plaza de España with a statue of a young girl called Fuente de la Niña which is the symbol of Benalmadena.

Benalmádena Costa

You can say that Benalmadena Costa is very tourist oriented however it is with the beautiful marina full of shops, restaurants and nightclubs. The square above the marina also holds a lot of night clubs and discoteques. On both sides of the marina the beaches stretches to neighbouring Fuengirola and Torremolinos. A nice, flat promenade just above the beach offers a nice walk to Torremolinos. The beaches in Benalmadena are clean and sunbeds are available to rent.

Arroyo de la Miel

Today a part of Benalmadena but a town of itself within the towm. The trainstation with frequent trains to Fuengirola and Malaga is located here as well as the biggest amusment park on the Costa del Sol - Tivoli World. From here you can also take the cable car that takes you to the highest point in the Malaga province.
