Costa del Sol

Food

When I hear someone say Spain, I think about Wine, Olives and Olive oil, Tapas, Paella and much more. Yes, a lot of Spain and the Costa del sol is food.

To start, in the summer when it is really hot and you may not feel for a hefty meal, the best thing there is is to slurp on a ice cold traditional Andalusian Gazpacho. Every Spanish restaurant serves Gazpacho and you can find really good ready made ones in any grocery store. If you ask any Spanish person how often they eat Gazpacho you will often get the answer - everyday!

Well, there is so much more then Gazpacho. On the beaches along the coast you can find a lot of small resaurants called Chiringitos. Most of them serve Paella, a traditional Spanish dish with rice, saffron, sea food and/or chicken. The Paella is perfect to share among a group of people and get a pitcher of Sangria or Tinto de Verano (Red wine summer punch). Very common is also a fish barbeque and grilled Anchovy.

It is not hard to find a nice bar that serves Tapas or Pinchos (pintxo in Basque). A Pincho is a kind of snack that is served warm or cold on a small piece of white bread. It is usual that the waiters walk around and you pick the ones you think look appetizing. Then you pay depending of how many tooth picks you have collected when you are satisfied.

I'll end the food section for you to explore, but what ever you do, don't miss the spanish hams - Jamon Serrano and Jamon Iberico (from the black pigs).

Wine and Sherry

The sunny and dry climate gives the wine from Andalucia its character. There are over 40.000 hectars of vineyards in Andalucia.
